Samuel ROUSSEAU

FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT

4 September - 22 October 2022

Frédérick Mouraux Gallery is honored to present a captivating collection of works by Samuel Rousseau…

Samuel Rousseau's videos currently animate the vast walls of the Frédérick Mouraux Gallery, literally making its exhibition surface VIBRATE.

Everything plays on the relationship of the video, on the light, the space, the time and the images which overflow with inventiveness and energy; where the signs of an imaginary and poetic memory mix. The artist likes to invert situations, to disrupt the codes that govern the patterns of our perception. Samuel Rousseau makes digital art warm, ingenious, and even reassuring: each montage does not seek to make something new at all costs, but to touch universally through invented formulations, sometimes tinged with humor or even irony.

Only the interaction between the viewers and the images counts.

The videos are poetic and aesthetic journeys that do not hide the dark realities of our world: the work is both dedicated to happiness and the dramas of life.

Samuel Rousseau is an unclassifiable artist. This "jack of all trades" hides his powerful subject matters in settings where the object, technology and space are combined in simple imagery of magical beauty. Rousseau likes to cast his mischievous, poetic and human eye on our world.

Samuel Rousseau (1971) was born in Marseille, France. He lives and works Elsewhere. He graduated from the École supérieure d'art de Grenoble in 1995 and founded the alternative art collective Le Brise-Glace (1998-2008). He was nominated for the Marcel Duchamp Prize in 2011 with his work Brave New World. In 2016, he was awarded the Medal of Arts by the French Academy of Architecture. His works are part of many public collections, including the Grenoble Museum, and the National Contemporary Art Funds of Puteaux and Alsace. In 2011, he exhibited at Parker's Box Gallery in New York and had a major solo show at the Claudine and Jean Marc Salomon Foundation. In 2003, he created a monumental work, Le Géant, at the Gaîté Lyrique theater in Paris, during the Nuit Blanche. Samuel Rousseau has had numerous exhibitions in galleries and institutions in France and abroad. Recently, he had a solo exhibition at Galerie RX in Paris.
