THE ANCIENNE NONCIATURE
Exhibition "In Praise of Time" Frédérick Mouraux Gallery in collaboration with the Ancienne Nonciature This private mansion, once the "Vatican Embassy" in Brussels, opposite the church of Notre-Dame du Sablon, has been given a new identity as the "Embassy of the Arts". Anne Derasse, the owner of the premises, interior designer and art historian, restored it over many years with perseverance and sensitivity, and has now set up her offices there, while the majestic state rooms, imbued with a subtle refinement, are opened for selected art events. This new lease of life for the architecture is enhanced by the artistic vision of Anne's partner, the artist Jörg Bräuer - together they are breathing new life into this iconic venue by inviting art galleries to make it a popular place on the art scene. For the second time in a row, following the success of their first collaboration, Frédérick Mouraux Gallery will be taking over the Ancienne Nonciature from 12 to 22 September 2024, encompassing the dates of the new Brussels art event “Rendez-vous” (12 to 15 Sept.) and the well-established “B.A.S.” (19 to 22 Sept.), which has been a fixture on the Sablon for many years. This association between the Ancienne Nonciature and Frédérick Mouraux Gallery is also the result of a beautiful encounter between two passionate couples, Anne Derasse and Jörg Bräuer, Frédérick Mouraux and Flavie Durand-Ruel. Based in Brussels since 2018, Frédérick Mouraux Gallery promotes international and committed contemporary artists. Based on the conviction that art can create greater awareness and contribute to positive change, the choice of artists focuses on those with strong messages. The themes addressed revolve around nature, ecology, human beings, flora, fauna, and time. Anne Derasse was immediately attracted by the dynamic nature of the gallery's program, and is the curator of this exhibition, whose evocative theme, "In Praise of Time", will be the guiding thread for the brilliant research of four international artists represented by Frédérick Mouraux Gallery, who have created their works specially in situ, in harmony with the site. This theme particularly appeals to Anne Derasse, whose architectural projects give rise to timeless, paradoxically contemporary worlds. Above all, she seeks to preserve the "soul of the place", that primal emotion that a residence reveals beyond the ravages of time. With the superb photographs of her partner Jörg Bräuer, she has just published a second monograph devoted to her projects, entitled "Anne Derasse - Le Temps intérieur - Inner Time", published by Beta-Plus. A correlation is established between the history of the sites, the architectural restoration and the contemporary nature of the works chosen. By the yardstick of time, the present encompasses the past for a rebirth rich in meaning. The theme of this new exhibition, "In Praise of Time", is inspired by Tanizaki's famous essay "In Praise of the Shadow" (1933). Time is the genesis of perpetual change; questions about it are infinite, opening up a host of philosophical reflections that are both universal and individual. In an age where technology is distorting our relationship with time, and generating a speed that is even beyond the grasp of human time, it is important to reappropriate time at a moment where, with the advent of the present moment, we will be shaken by the force or grace of works of art.
Jörg BRÄUER – Germany – Reflection on space and the alteration of matter by time form the perpetual foundation of Jörg Bräuer's artistic research, which is expressed through a variety of media: photography, painting, typography and installations. In his themes, which he chooses from among architecture and the essential elements of nature, he imbues his conceptual approach with a poetic vision of the little-known universes that surround us. With chromatic subtlety and graphic purity that border on abstraction, he lets us perceive the texture of time.
Jean-Philippe DUBOSCQ – Belgium – As his work has already been presented at Frédérick Mouraux Gallery several times, Duboscq’s conceptual works are well known. The superimposed canvases are often torn, ripped, folded, unfolded, folded again... constructed, decomposed, reconstructed... On which the color, sometimes vivid, seeps in, overflows, and becomes an integral part of the work. The rhythm of the surfaces is reminiscent of the rhythm of the music found in the artist’s musical compositions or in the writings of Samuel Beckett.
Dom GRAY – United Kingdom – The artist makes us appreciate his abstract paintings, often monochrome, painted on paper. The support is exposed by the technique, which does not extend entirely over the surface: unfinished edges from which we, the viewers, can escape. By dint of superimposing the color in "sheets of paint" the artist decomposes the structure.
Julien SALAUD – France – Julien Salaud is an artist with an atypical background. After studying science, he turned to ethnology before moving to French Guiana for several years, where he worked in the rainforest to protect the environment. On his return to France, he began training in the plastic arts. In 2010, he was the revelation of the 55th Salon de Montrouge, and in 2012 his work was shown at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. Today, he develops his work with the aim of achieving an ecological balance through committed techniques that are as respectful as possible of the environment and natural resources.
