Barbara DEBEUCKELAERE

Barbara Debeuckelaere is a Belgian visual artist and photographer, based in Ghent, Belgium.

Her art work is caught between labels as documentary and conceptual as she visualizes an abstract idea and at the same time incorporates events to support a philosophical, economical or political concept. She concentrates on systemic thinking, capitalism, normalization, power, money and fascism. People are at the core of her work and even if they do not appear in images, they are very present. Debeuckelaere has the ambition to visualize the invisible, critical of the creeping normalization in the neoliberal realm of things. She works with documentary strategies as well as with constructed images and re-enactment. She studied economics and international law and was a radio and tv journalist for VRT, till she quit, to study visual arts at KASK in Ghent and work on her own artistic projects, mainly through photography. Her work has been awarded (.tiff, PHMuseum Bologna,…), published (DS Weekblad De Standaard, De Volkskrant, …) and exhibited (Fotomuseum Antwerp, Brakke Grond Amsterdam, Interface @Lille Art Up,…) many times
